Material. Memory. Possibility.

A WAY OF SEEING

The past,
made present.

Piet Hein Eek doesnt hide the history of his materials. He builds with it.
Since graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1990 with a cupboard assembled from salvaged floorboards, he has made a career out of what others discard — scrap wood, demolished-building planks, industrial offcuts — turning them into furniture that carries its past openly, as a feature rather than a flaw. His scrapwood pieces dont pretend to be new. Thats precisely why they last.
Over the decades, his Eindhoven studio has grown into a full manufacturing complex, producing furniture, interiors, and architectural projects. But the instinct has never changed: that the most honest design starts with the material as it actually is, not as you wish it were.
His latest project takes that instinct further than ever. The Eindhoven-Dakar Design Rally — born from a lost set of keys, a chance meeting, and three trips to Senegal — is a collaboration with local craftsmen and artists in Dakar, producing furniture and objects that bridge two cities, two ways of making, and one shared conviction: that overlooked things have value.
Which, come to think of it, is exactly what ArtCycle is about.
